The future Duchess of Varmland

The royal bride of the year will have a royal title all of her own after she ties the knot with her handsome prince in June. The Swedish Royal Court has confirmed that after Sofia Hellqvist marries Prince Carl Philip in less than a month's time she will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Sofia, Duchess of Varmland.

From June 13th, she'll be known as HRH Princess Sofia, Duchess of Varmland

It's really just confirmation of what many already thought would happen. Sofia is marrying the third in line to the throne of Sweden and was always likely to be given a title.

However, since her soon to be brother-in-law Chris O'Neill decided against a royal title on his own marriage to Princess Madeleine in 2013 there was no absolute guarantee. The change in status for Sofia will mean that Chris O'Neill is the only person in Sweden's small nuclear ruling house with no regal title of his own.

Varmland is a province in the west of Sweden and the title of Duke of Varmland has been in use for over 700 years. Prince Carl Philip was given the title at birth and now, 36 years on, he will have a duchess to share it with.
