Launching a new royal career

Princess Isabella of Denmark has taken a new step on the royal life that stretches out ahead of her. The second child of Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary has carried out a day of engagements which included launching a ferry named in her honour. And throughout her big adventure she had the calming influence of mum at hand to help her as she started her new royal career.

Princess Isabella of Denmark with her mother, Crown Princess Mary, on her first day of royal engagements

Isabella seemed calm, happy and very assured as she spent the day on the island of Samso. She started off with some strawberry picking and dived into the field with her mum where they foraged for fruit and tried plenty of it as they went along, all under the watchful eyes of the press.

And just because it was her first day at the office, there was no taking it easy for Isabella who then donned a pair of waders to walk into the sea and get a closer look at the fish off the shores of Samso. If mum Mary looked a little bit worried at this point it had no effect on her daughter who kept on keeping on while the Crown Princess looked like every other mother taking her child into the sea - worried but trying to smile so they enjoy it.

Then Mary had to keep the fixed grin on her face as he eight year old got up close with a falcon as the royal pair heard about the nature on the island and how humans help it thrive there.

Things got a bit more relaxed for Denmark's future queen consort as her daughter's day of engagements came to an end. They headed to the port to launch a new ferry named after Princess Isabella. And that's where the third in line to the throne really hit her stride. She accepted a posy of flowers like she'd been doing it for years before tackling a royal walkabout with the confidence of a royal many years older. Then she named the new boat by smashing a bottle of blackcurrant juice against its side. And all princesses need presents - in this case, Isabella was given some mother of pearl jewellery which she happily showed off to her mum who by now looked more than relieved that the adventure packed morning of fish and birds was over and her baby was back on dry land with no meat eating animals jumping up and down on her arm.

But it was Mary's calm support throughout the whole day that no doubt helped Isabella enjoy her first full day of royal engagements and turn it into a major success. She has already carried out some engagements with her whole family and last summer they spent a week in Greeland where the Crown Prince and Princess took their four children out and about on day trips to meet and greet. But this is the first time Isabella has taken a starring role in engagements with a day of events built around her. Mum was very much in a supporting role as Isabella learned the royal ropes. This little princess will be passing her days like this for decades to come. On this evidence, she's more than ready for it.
