Royals on social media

The summer months are unfolding in a haze of sunshine and royal activity is starting to slow. A lot of the messages shared on official social media channels this week have been about looking back to the past or at work behind the scenes that goes on all year round. But there have still be stories to be told on Twitter, Facebook and You Tube and what is posted there gives a good indication of where royal priorities lie right now. Here is how the royal week went on social media.

Diana's boys in action


In the month when she would have marked her 54th birthday, Diana's legacy has a new prominence. Maybe it's the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to name their daughter after the paternal grandmother she will never meet but in the days of July 2015 the late princess's presence has been much more obvious. Her lesson to reach out to those who need help was obvious in the powerful words spoken by Prince Harry in a video message released on Twitter and You Tube to announce a second Invictus Games.



Meanwhile, big brother William began his new job as a pilot with the East Anglian Air Ambulance giving an interview in which he said he just wanted to be 'a good guy'. It was very Diana and his striking resemblence to his mother was evident in images of him on his first day at work shared on the official Kensington Palace Twitter feed.



But it was his words for his children that really made headlines as William called his daughter, Charlotte, a 'little joy of heaven' and his son, George, a 'little monkey'. The Mario Testino image of the Cambridges still dominates the Kensington Palace Instagram page and has now hit almost 85,000 likes with another 11,000 favourites on Twitter.




Happy Birthday



Two big royal birthdays were celebrated on official social media channels this week. Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden turned 38 and an image of her enjoying her birthday concert was shared on the official Facebook page of the Swedish Royal Family.



The Duchess of Cornwall marked her 68th birthday on July 15th with messages of congratulations on the British Monarchy, Kensington Palace and Clarence House Twitter accounts.






Splashing around



In the heat of summer, a splash around is always welcome and there was plenty of water on offer in the week. The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh spent the day in Barking and Dagenham and one of their engagements involved a trip to a swimming pool to watch a display. A photo of Philip enjoying the day out was shared on the British Monarchy Twitter feed.




Queen Mathilde of the Belgians took her youngest child, Princess Eleonore, along to the traditional ceremony to bless the sea at Blankenberge. Images were shared on the official Belgian Monarchy Twitter account.







The King of Spain travelled to Marin to take part in the ceremony honouring the county's flag at the Naval Military School for the first time since his accession.  Images of the event were shared on the official Twitter account.
