Spanish State Visit to the UK is off

The State Visit by King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia of Spain to the UK has been postponed. The major trip, the first by a Spanish Head of State for 30 years, was announced in December but will now not take place for the forseeable future.

The King and Queen of Spain won't be making a State Visit to the UK this spring

Felipe and Letizia were due to make a three day visit in March but it's understood that politicians in the PSOE now want the event put back while the country's parties try to work out who will form a government following the recent general elections. The last Spanish State Visit to the UK was in 1986 when King Felipe's father, King Juan Carlos, was the guest of the Queen along with Queen Sofia.

The Queen hosts two State Visits a year, the last being in October 2015 when the President of China, Xi Jinping, was her guest. It is too late for another State Visit to be put in place for this spring meaning the next time one can take place is the coming autumn. It's not clear yet whether the Spanish State Visit will take place then.
