The Windsor Wrap: headlines from the week

It's been a busy week for the House of Windsor. We got tennis, we got football, we got trains, we got a whole new railway line. That's not bad for seven days. Here's a round up for the week in the Windsor Wrap.


The Duchess of Cambridge visited Edinburgh on Wednesday. Kate popped into St Catherine's Primary School to see more of the work of Place2Be, the mental health charity of which she is patron and to join a discussion with headteachers from across Edinburgh about mental health support.

Then it was time for tennis. Kate is about to become patron of the All England Tennis and Croquet Club, also known as Wimbledon, and she got a lesson in tennis from the woman who gave Britain its first Men's Singles Champion in almost eighty years. Judy Murray showed tennis fan Kate how it's done and gave her some tips for getting George and Charlotte into sport. Watch this space for the Cambridge children with racquets. 




Want to see an earl playing football? It's definitely your week then. The sporting theme continued as the Earl of Wessex headed to Manchester City, the first football club to be licensed to run the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Edward heard about the impact the scheme has on young people and he also donned a tracksuit, perhaps a bit more outside his comfort zone than it is for Kate but he showed he's a good sport by going casual.




There was more sport as the week came to an end and Prince Charles headed to Wales. He visited Llanelli, Aberdare, Bridgend and Llandovery where he got a rousing reception from the players of the local rugby club - he's been their patron since 2009. On the same day, Prince William watched Wales play France in the Six Nations but it was dad's visit to the grassroots sport that got everyone talking.



We got confirmation of a hat trick of royal tours for the coming months. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall will visit Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo between March 14th and March 19th while Prince Harry will head to Nepal between March 20th and March 23rd. William and Kate are off to India and Bhutan between April 10th and April 16th and there was confirmation that their trip will include a visit to the Taj Mahal where Diana, Princess of Wales was famously photographed alone in 1992.

The Duke of Edinburgh enjoyed himself as he joined the 30th anniversary celebrations for the Kurt Hahn Trust. Prince Philip praised the work of the Trust and spent the evening meeting guests and looking about as relaxed as he has in a long time.


But the biggest story of the week was the announcement that the new Crossrail will be named after the Queen. The Elizabeth Line will officially open in December 2018 but this week the monarch who is lending it her name visited a station construction site and unveiled the new roundel which will feature at stations alone the line. And appropriately for a line named after the longest reigning monarch in British history, it will appear on the maps in regal purple. And that is a wrap on the Windsor week.
