Royal Headlines: May 9th 2016

One day, five stories - here are the royal headlines for May 9th starting with Queen Mathilde of the Belgians who attended the first semi final of the Queen Elisabeth Piano Competition in Brussels with her youngest child, Princess Eleonore, who turned eight in April. It's not the first public engagement for Eleonore and she certainly looked very comfortable at mum's side at this big annual event.

Queen Letizia of Spain presented the Red Cross gold medals on the organisation's global day to those who have helped society and others. In her speech, Letizia said that very few organisations inspired as much respect around the world as the Red Cross.

King Felipe VI, meanwhile, was presenting the tenth Carlos V award for work that encourages integration across Europe. This year's winner was Sofia Corradi who created the Erasmus Programme. In his speech, Felipe said Europe needs its younger citizens to affirm the values of the EU including democracy and freedom.

With just a day to go until the State Visit from Chile, the King and Queen of Sweden, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel met with officials to make final preparations for the trip. The State Visit, by President Michelle Bachelet, is the first incoming visit by a Chilean Head of State to Sweden and gets under way on May 10th.

The Prince of Wales issued a video message about the role that the financial sector can have in helping the environment and protecting wildlife. Charles delivered his message to City Week, a gathering of financial services representatives from across the world.
