Denmark's royal holiday album

Crown Princess Mary of Denmark has been taking part in a royal summer tradition

It's that time of year when everyone's thoughts turn to holidays and camera lenses turn to royal summer residences around the continent for the traditional pre break pose. This week it's the turn of Denmark's Royal Family and while their summer snapshot session was a bit smaller and more low key than usual, it still provided some fabulous photos to get the season started.

Queen Margrethe II and Prince Henrik welcomed their family and photographers to Grasten Castle in Jutland for the traditional picture call. It was grey and cloudy which meant the summer dresses needed cardigans and the men needed jackets and the Queen of Denmark decided a more formal look was needed and chose a bright pink suit.

Margrethe and Henrik were joined by the elder son, Crown Prince Frederik, his wife, Mary, and their four children.

Prince Christian, 11, and Princess Isabella, 9, have this down to a fine art now. They stood on the steps, smiled and waved and kept it all very royal.

Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, now five, had different ideas but then Josephine usually does. The action shots of this holiday pose came from these two as they bounced and bounded their way around the palace steps.

Maybe they were missing the company of their cousins, Margrethe and Henrik's other son, Joachim, and his family weren't there and the whole session was rather low key compared to previous years. Then we've had walks through grounds and poses on bridges. This year it was all confined to the steps of the castle and after a few smiles and waves, it was over for another year.

But then this summer will be fairly busy for them with engagements scattered through July and August as well as the Olympic Games to attend. And Prince Joachim is top of the work list - he is to be regent for twelve days in August. So the summer photo session of Denmark's royals summed up their holiday season ahead - brief breaks but still business as normal.
