A statue of Diana, Princess of Wales is to be put up in her memory in the grounds of Kensington Palace. It is at the request of her sons, William and Harry, their lasting legacy of love to their mother in the year they mark twenty years since her death.

The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry issued a statement late on Saturday night confirming that they had asked for a statue of their mother to be put up in the grounds of Kensington Palace, her London home which became a focal point for tributes in the weeks after her death and where William and Harry themselves now live.

In the statement, the princes said ''the time is right to recognise her positive impact in the UK and around the world with a permanent statue. Our mother touched so many lives. We hope the statue will help all those who visit Kensington Palace to reflect on her life and her legacy.''

William and Harry have set up a committee to commission the statue which will be paid for through private fund raising. Details of who will design and sculpt the statue will be made public at a later date.

There is no date, either, for the official unveiling - yet. Diana died following a car crash on August 31st 1997 in Paris and she was buried on September 6th at her childhood home of Althorp, Northamptonshire.

Diana will also be remembered this year with a National Kindness Day in March as part of a year of events.  Two decades on, her legacy lives on.
